Avivit in her own words

From the revealed to the hidden – and back again

The point of departure in my work is one of ideas.
In the course of converting an idea into a painting, all sorts of visual, material and verbal imagery emerge – a bridge, a library, a wheel, bars, parentheses, a map, etc.…
These epitomize the physical and symbolic “place” where issues such as belonging or alienation, cultural heritage, and marks of one’s personal identity are examined, with particular focus on aspects such as boundaries, and the dual states of attachment and detachment, standing apart and blending in – states that are manifested in location-specific indicators of culture and language.
As a multi-disciplinary artist, I examine the boundary region between the real and conceptual: this boundary, or transitory terrain, represents the focus of my work.
A transitory terrain is a virtual arena of freedom of choice – a sort of no-man’s-land where everything is possible.  It embodies the moment of choice of one or the other – the real or the conceptual – or perhaps of the transitory terrain itself, where the encounter takes place. This transition/encounter invites the simultaneous  presence of a full-bodied materialism that gives the painting its “body” – an actual physical presence – together with the words and images that it represents.
As an integral part of my work, writing appears within the plastic work both as a bearer of content/ideas and as a visual/drawing value in its own right. In this way,  a tripartite dialogue emerges between the painted image, the material, and the word. But since the appearance of the words within the painting is not systematic – and give n that my written works and poems have their own separate, parallel existence – a “reading” that goes back and forth between the painting and the writing,  with each feeding the other, may be more appropriate. Such a reading traces a movement along the axis between the real and the conceptual, and back again.
